Martha Arney, ISA; has been a member of the International Society of Appraisers since 1995.  She felt there was a need for responsible and ethical appraisers in Michiana and Harbor Country.  Her affiliation with the International Society of Appraisers has been an on-going educational experience for the last six years and continues on an annual basis to increase her knowledge in the field of antiques and residential contents.  Future plans include attending more specialty courses offered through ISA and taking the Requalification Course in October of 2001.

ISA 2008 Conference Notes

Baltimore, MD

Martha Arney, ISA AM recently attended lectures, tours and hands-on workshops during the annual ISA (International Society of Appraisers) Conference in Baltimore, Maryland held April 25-28. The ISA is an international association that offers a comprehensive professional development program designed to build and enhance performance in the area of personal property appraisal practice as well as specialty studies. The four main divisions are: Antiques and Residential Contents, Fine Art, Gems and Jewelry, and Machinery and Equipment.

The annual conference brings together experts from North America in the fields of Antiques and Residential Contents, Gems and Jewelry and Fine Art; giving attendees the unique opportunity to study with the likes of Wendell Garrett (Editor of the magazine Antiques and regular Antiques Roadshow appraiser, Sumpter Priddy III (author and scholar of American culture), Ken Specht (author of The Specht Sheet), and Lita Solis-Cohen (senior editor of Maine Antiques Digest).

Wendell Garrett opened the conference with a speech entitled, "By the Dawn’s Early Light": The Rise of American Nationalism". Mrs. Arney attended numerous lectures for three days in Baltimore presented by scholars and experts in art, glass, antique furniture and decorative arts. Special tours she attended at the conference included the Maryland Historical Society with a back-room glimpse of Peale portraits and a lecture on Peale portraits by Carrie Barratt, a tour of the Baltimore Museum of Art housing over 90,000 works of art and an exceptional collection of antique furniture and decorative arts and a tour of the Lancaster Quilt and Textile Museum with a collection of Amish quilts on display. Prior to the conference Mr. and Mrs. Arney toured Monticello and numerous historical locations in Virginia.

As a result of this conference, Martha greatly expanded her field of expertise in the areas of fine art, antique furniture and decorative arts.
